Renting in Catonsville: Where to Look and What to Know

People ask me all the time where to find a rental in Catonsville. My honest answer surprises them: not through a real estate agent.

Most Catonsville rentals never touch the MLS, the system agents use. On any given day there are usually fewer than ten rentals listed there. Most landlords here rent directly, through a property manager, or by word of mouth. So if you want to rent in Catonsville, you need to know where to look.

Where Catonsville Rentals Are Actually Listed

  • Zillow. It has more Catonsville rentals than any other site. Start here, and set up an alert for 21228.
  • Local Facebook groups. Catonsville Neighbors and Catonsville Rentals are where a lot of private landlords post first. Read the scam warning below before you reply to anyone.
  • CVille Properties. The biggest local property management company, right on Frederick Road. They manage a lot of the houses and smaller buildings in town.

Apartments in Catonsville

Catonsville’s apartment complexes are almost all garden-style buildings, two or three stories, and at least 50 years old. You won’t find new luxury towers here. Most of them sit more than a mile from the center of town, so plan on driving to Frederick Road rather than walking.

Montrose Manor is one of the larger complexes closest to downtown, with about 105 units from studios to two bedrooms.

The exception to the “drive to town” rule is Cherry Tree Manor on Egges Lane. It’s right in the middle of town, a short walk from the restaurants, shops and farmers market on Frederick Road.

Renting a House or Townhouse

Most Catonsville neighborhoods have a small share of homes that are rented out, usually single-family houses whose owners moved but held on to them. So a rental house could turn up almost anywhere, from Winters Lane to Paradise to the streets around Prospect Avenue.

Older houses come with older-house quirks. Ask about the heating system and the utility costs, whether there’s central air, and where you’ll park. Our neighborhood guides can help you get a feel for each area before you go see a place.

What Rent Costs in Catonsville

Living Near UMBC

UMBC sits on Catonsville’s southern edge, and a lot of students, faculty and staff rent nearby. Expect more competition for rentals close to campus in late spring and summer, before the fall semester. If you’re looking for fall, start early.

How to Avoid Rental Scams

Rental scams have been all over Facebook Marketplace lately. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Check the profile. If the person listing the rental only joined Facebook this year or last year, that’s a big red flag.
  • Don’t click their links. The common scam is a link to an “application” or a login page. Once you click it, enter a password or pay a fee, they’ve got you.
  • Never pay before you’ve seen the inside. A real landlord will show you the property.
  • Look up the rental license. Most rentals in Baltimore County have to be registered. You can search any address in the county’s rental registration property search to confirm it’s a registered rental and see who owns it.
